The toilets on Newnham Street and Sacrists Gate are to be closed this year, while the Barton Road loos will close next year.

500-signature petition ignored

Despite an impassioned plea from the local Access Group, and a petition of over 500 signatures calling on the council to save Ely's public toilets, councillors have voted to close the toilets at Newnham Street (Paradise Centre) and Sacrists Gate.

Not one of the seven Conservative councillors present at the meeting was willing to support an amendment from Lib Dem Councillor Lorna Dupré to keep Newnham Street toilets open, and to work with the Access Group to find a solution for Palace Green and Sacrists Gate.

City of Ely Council has come forward with funds to keep Barton Road toilets open for another year - funds taken from the Community Infrastructure Levy paid by the developers of the Cinema.

Lib Dem Councillor Lorna voted to keep the toilets open.
